Connecting a GMX or WEB.DE calendar
You connect a GMX or WEB.DE calendar with your e-mail address and an app-specific password. You don’t need a server address; SyncMyDay finds the server itself.
Before you start
You’ll need:
- your e-mail address – for GMX ending in
@gmx.net,@gmx.de,@gmx.at,@gmx.chor@gmx.com, for WEB.DE in@web.de, - an app-specific password (anwendungsspezifisches Passwort). Your regular GMX password often doesn’t work for CalDAV, and WEB.DE doesn’t accept the regular password for external programs at all.
The steps below follow the German-language account settings at gmx.net and web.de, so the labels are quoted in German.
Create an app-specific password at GMX
-
Open your account settings
Sign in at gmx.net, click the icon with your initials and then Account verwalten (manage account).
-
Create the password
Open Login & Sicherheit → Anwendungsspezifische Passwörter verwalten and click Neues anwendungsspezifisches Passwort erstellen. Give it a name, e.g.
SyncMyDay.More details are in the GMX help (in German).
Create an app-specific password at WEB.DE
-
Open your account settings
Sign in at web.de, click the icon with your initials and then Account verwalten.
-
Create the password
Open Sicherheit (security) and in the Zwei-Faktor-Authentifizierung section create an anwendungsspezifisches Passwort, e.g. named
SyncMyDay. Copy it right away.More details are in the WEB.DE help (in German).
Connect the calendar in SyncMyDay
-
Enter your e-mail and password
- E-mail address – your full address, e.g.
max.muster@gmx.de. - Password – the app-specific password you just created.
You don’t enter a server address; SyncMyDay finds it. Click Find calendars.
- E-mail address – your full address, e.g.
-
Choose a calendar
SyncMyDay lists the calendars in your account; for GMX that’s all of them, not just the default one. Pick one, adjust its name if you like and click Complete Setup. You can switch to another calendar later in the calendar’s detail via Edit.
A calendar marked Read-only can only be the source of a one-way rule. Blockers can’t be written into it, and it can’t be used for two-way sync.
-
Done
Your calendar now appears among your calendars.
Troubleshooting
“GMX rejected the sign-in details.” or “WEB.DE rejected the sign-in details.”
- Use an app-specific password, not your regular password.
- Make sure you entered the full e-mail address.
- If you deleted the app-specific password in the meantime, create a new one.
“The server isn’t accepting more sign-in attempts right now. Please try again in a few minutes.”
After several failed sign-in attempts in a row, further attempts are paused for a while. Wait a few minutes and check the password before trying again.
Sync stopped and I got an e-mail
When the stored password stops working (for example because you deleted the app-specific password), SyncMyDay pauses the connection and e-mails you. Open the calendar on the Calendars page, click Edit, fill in New password (optional) and click Save changes.
A change didn’t show up in the target calendar right away
GMX and WEB.DE calendars are checked every 5 minutes, so a change shows up within a few minutes.

Technical details
For developers and IT
Connection
- Servers:
https://caldav.gmx.net(addresses on@gmx.com:https://caldav.gmx.com) andhttps://caldav.web.de, found via/.well-known/caldav(RFC 6764). The username is the full e-mail address. - HTTPS only; the password is encrypted at rest (libsodium).
- Calendars the account can’t write to are detected via
current-user-privilege-setand marked read-only.
Sync
- Every 5 minutes we compare the calendar’s
getctag/sync-token. If it hasn’t changed, events aren’t downloaded again. At least once an hour the whole calendar is re-checked. - Events are fetched with a
REPORT(calendar-query); recurring events are expanded into individual occurrences on our side. - Blockers contain only the rule’s blocker title (e.g. “Busy”),
TRANSP:OPAQUEandCLASS:PRIVATE. They have no description, location or attendees, so no invitations are sent.
